At ShoilySchool, learner safety and trust are our top priorities. To maintain a secure learning environment, all approved educators in Canada are required to complete both identity verification and a criminal background check before teaching on the platform.
This process helps ensure that students and families can confidently engage with verified educators in a safe online environment.
Background Check Service (Canada)
ShoilySchool uses a secure, third-party background screening service to complete educator background checks in Canada.
This service is industry-standard and designed to comply with Canadian privacy and security regulations.

- Information is handled according to strict privacy standards
Depending on regulatory requirements, additional identity or document verification may be required during the process.
Eligibility Requirements (Canada)
Before starting a background check, educators in Canada must meet the following conditions:
- You must be at least 18 years old
- You must be a legal resident of Canada
- You must reside in Canada for at least 6 months per year
- You must have completed your ShoilySchool educator application and received approval to proceed
- You must have a valid government-issued ID
- You must be legally allowed to work as an independent educator in Canada
Citizenship is not required, but valid Canadian residency and identification are required.
What the Background Check Screens For
ShoilySchool background checks are conducted to support learner safety and focus on relevant trust and safety risks, including:
- Violent offenses
- Fraud or deception-related crimes
- Internet-based offenses
- Crimes involving minors or vulnerable individuals
- Other trust and safety–related criminal records
We focus on relevance to online teaching safety. Minor traffic or vehicle violations are not considered.
Each case is reviewed individually, taking into account the nature of the offense and how recent it was.
Canadian Background Check Process
For educators in Canada, the background check process includes additional steps to comply with Canadian privacy laws:
- Start the background check from your ShoilySchool educator account
- Receive instructions and required forms
- Complete identity confirmation steps
- Submit required documentation, which may include:
- Canadian government-issued ID
- Additional identity verification documents
- Complete any required video or live verification (if requested)
- Submit all materials securely for review
Once submitted, the background check is processed within a few business days in most cases.
Processing Time
- Most Canadian background checks take a few business days
- Some cases may take longer depending on verification requirements
- Additional document requests may extend processing time
Educators will be notified if any additional steps are needed.
Background Check Renewal
To maintain platform safety, ShoilySchool requires educators to renew their background check every year.
- Renewal is required annually (12 months after approval)
- Educators will receive a reminder before renewal is due
- Renewal must be completed within the given timeframe
Failure to complete renewal on time may result in temporary suspension from teaching until the process is completed.
Teaching During Renewal
If an educator is renewing their background check:
- They may continue teaching existing enrolled students
- They may not be able to accept new enrollments until the renewal is approved
This ensures continuity for current students while maintaining safety standards.
Failure to Complete Renewal
If an educator does not complete their background check renewal:
- Their teaching privileges may be paused or suspended
- They will not be able to accept new students
- Active listings may be affected until compliance is restored
